This curious heiroglyphic is the (a ?) logo of the IRC in Surface Science. It represents a diatomic molecule approaching a surface. As it gets closer, the bond holding the two atoms together gradually weakens until very close to the surface the atoms fly apart and the molecule dissociates.

The particular type of dissociation reaction depicted is known as direct dissociation.
